The main competitor of the Boeing 747-X Ecoliner is going to be the Airbus A370 (pictures below)... Although I am convinced that cooperation and friendship in industry in general result in higher security and quality than contests (the history of space research shows us this clearly from the cold war to the International Space Station) there is another alternative as well... It is also good namely if two or more independent research groups come to the same or very similar results because this means that they have found the truth on their own - so a little bit of "competition" can also mean security, quality and even variety, of course...
